PRO MUSICA ORCHESTRA:
DIRECTED BY LEO PHILLIPS
TASANA NAGAVAJARA VIOLA
FRANZ SCHUBERT
SONATA FOR ARPEGGIONE (ARR. LUIGI PIOVANO)
STRING QUARTET IN D MINOR "DEATH AND THE MAIDEN" (ARR. GUSTAV MAHLER)

Pro Musica Orchestra, directed by Leo Phillips, and featuring Tasana Nagavajara as viola soloist, will perform the transcriptions of two classic Schubert masterpieces: his famous String Quartet 'Death and the Maiden', and the ever-popular 'Arpeggione' Sonata.

The arpeggione was an instrument invented around 1823 by Viennese guitar maker Johann Georg Stauffer. This six-stringed, bowed instrument was the inspiration for Schubert to write his sonata in November of 1824. Although the instrument itself never became popular, the sonata lives on as one of the most favoured of Schubert's works and it is most commonly played today on the viola or cello with piano.
There have been many adaptations of The Arpeggione Sonata for cello or viola and orchestra, and numerous versions for other instruments, but this transcription by Italian cellist Luigi Piovano is as satisfying as they come, honouring the work’s originality while asserting its practicality as a modern concert piece.

Gustav Mahler’s arrangement for string orchestra of Schubert’s string quartet “Death and the Maiden", is considered to be one of the most challenging works for string orchestra. Four gripping movements, including the set of variations composed on the melody of Schubert's own song of that name, will give Bangkok's Pro Musica Orchestra a most exciting opportunity to showcase their musicianship and virtuosity.

The Pro Musica Orchestra concert will be held at The Anantara Bangkok Hotel (formerly The Four Seasons Hotel) on Tuesday June 7th at 20.00
Tickets are 600 Baht (100 Baht for student with ID). For reservations please contact: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
